...to get me to post online again. I just readthis article. Oh, and the source article. And now I really have to comment.

This is a long one, just keep walking if you don't have the time...

Wow can I rant )

Alright, closing remarks here. As a biologist, I can only see one way to prove that chimps are "practically human". Mate with them. If these people want to prove it, they need to start sexing up this chimps and having VIABLE OFFSPRING. They have to mate, too. This is how you prove it. If they are not willing to take this step, then they need to shut the FUCK up. This is the EXACT reason why horses and donkeys are two different species: they can have offspring, but they are sterile and the line is dead. Hence, there is a species difference, regardless of any other factors.

I will accept one other method for animals to become human: an existing human gives up all claim to the species in exchange. A 1 to 1 exchange. I suggest the lawyer, but for the future animals, someone has to come forward for each animal.

Do we REALLY need a law that defines a human has "I can't define one, but I know it when I see it?" PEOPLE AREN'T PORN.

OK, classes are going a bit rough. It was always so EASY to slack in undergrad and below. I could do minimal effort and still get A's and B's and the occasional C. This quarter has been a systematic kicking of my ass. I think, though, some good is coming from it. I'm ready to admit just how easily distracted I really am, so I've taken some steps. Namely, I've locked up all my computer games after deleting them from my computer (even the saves >_< ), as well all my comic books and controllers to my video games. Even the D&D books. Essentially I completely reduced my options to reading nonfiction, practicing an instrument, drawing, studying, or cruising the net. The last option is still a problem, since I need the web to do some of my work/studies. I'm open to advice on that.

In other news, the aikido club I'm VP of is going crazy at the moment. It turns out our advisor/instructor has made several executive decisions without informing the club of the effects of it or even consulting the officers. One of these decisions is actually in direct antagonism to our constitution! We've always let things slip by before, but apparently some members have left for this exact reason and we are now verging on bankruptcy. The other officers and I have decided to have some meetings to discuss where everything is going and all that. Hopefully it goes well, I've been a part of this club for 4 years, I would had to see it go under.

What else? Eh, lots of other stuff, I'll see if I feel like posting about it later.

Oh yeah, and I got this quiz from [info]grain_of_sand:

For some reason, I'm feeling this powerful need to be frightened. Maybe it has something to do with just passing by Halloween, but I can't deny it. I need a good frightening movie, a scary game. Something that makes me hesitate to turn out the lights. I'm betting that I know where the energy for this need is coming from: I'm about to take the last test of my long exam period, where I've had about 2 tests a week. Some of my grades have been less than stellar and I'm a bit worried about this last one, as it's got a ton of info on it. I could just be transferring concern from that (which is harder to face) to a need to scare myself in a more controllable situation which I can easily face. OH well, I better get back to my studies.

Ok, those few people who are reading this now know that I don't really update this thing too often. I've made it as easy as possible to do so: I've got a good client, it's one click away from opening so I can just write down any thoughts that enter my head. The usual result is to ignore it, uncommonly I'll post a quiz result and very rarely I'll make some asinine statement that I'm planning on getting back into LJ. So what is it this time? Well, no quiz yet and I've already hit the button, so here we are.

Actually, I think I've been approaching this thing in the wrong way lately. I've never known if this thing was really just an online public diary, a personal forum, or my own little soap box. I've been confused as to what this thing really is and I believe the confusion is expressed as shitty little quizzes here and there and several entries which were typed up but never posted. A diary always feels too self absorbed, as does a personal forum. I kind of like the soap box idea, as I rarely get a chance to just speak my mind with no interruptions. However, I've also learned that if I'm just left to myself to express an opinion, I have some pretty volatile ones and I can't always back them up.

So this is no promise to update more regularly. Don't get me wrong. Most likely this is another segue to the next 6 months or so of radio silence here at LJ. It was just a thought I had while studying for a test. If anyone has a preference for what I do here (journal or soapbox) just let me know.

You scored as XVI: The Tower. If badly aspected this can be the worst card of the Tarot deck. The Tower always indicates upheavel, possibly chaos, loss and destruction. Its effects are never pleasant and can be painful. The card illustrates lightning striking the Tower. The lightning cannot be avoided, the destruction it brings is inevitable. All we can do is attempt to survive and rebuild. The Tower brings sudden, severe change. When the Tower appears in a Tarot spread it represents sudden and possibly violent change, disruption or loss.

This goes back to either my senior or junior year of high school. Ted, Jerry, and I had discovered that OSU has a free club for capoeira, an activity which is not quite a game, a dance, nor a martial art entirely, but is really a combination of all those plus a bit of mysticism. Needless to say, this caught our attention and we were willing to go to on a regular basis for awhile, which is pretty impressive, since it only met Sundays and Wednesdays from 8-10 at night and we had to drive from Dublin to go. We quickly found it to be fascinating and difficult, but each of us had our strengths. The technique I was the first of the three of us to become proficient in was the quexada, a rather complicated looking maneuver that can be rather easy to pull off quickly. As simply as I can put it, you step forward with your right foot, then without moving that foot, you cross your left leg behind the right, crossing your legs (there will also have to be a twist of the lower body while moving your feet, so your feet will have made an almost 90 degree turn to the left). You keeps both legs pretty straight and you should feel some not insignificant pressure, especially if you also twist your torso to the right. This torque that you have placed in your entire body is what is used to propel the right foot into an arch that goes surprisingly high and fast, allowing you to easily connect with your opponents jaw with your heel. To minimize unbalance this is all to be done lightning fast, though it is fair to say that capoeira is an art of finding balance in unbalance. Anyways, around this time I was looking for a new username, as craig42md was reaching the end of its use. So, I realized quexada is similar to Quixote, so I slapped the title Don in front of it and away I went.

I'm not going to tag anyone, as those who I would I already know ^_^

I'll try to come up with an interesting post sometime soon, I've got some ideas but I want to have them fleshed out before I put something up here.

Ok, I better just do this and get it over with or Cherries is going to kill me.

As of Tuesday of this week, I have some great news for anyone who has been following major events in my life. I can't think of any interesting ways to present this, so I'll just spit it out. On Monday I missed a call from the OSU veterinary school. I called them back while I was at work on Tuesday and it turns out that I've been accepted!

WHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about this. A lot of people have been very supportive of me and I just want to say thanks. For now I need to go and get ready for work, I'll try to post more about this later.

I've been doing a bit of thinking. For awhile I've been wondering what I want to do when I'm "settled" and leading an adult life. I've got a lot of hobbies, but at some point I'm going to have to start cutting some and picking what I actually want to be GOOD at. So here's what I'm thinking at the moment:

This ended up being rather long and I got complaints over my last post... )

So, yeah, back to studies. There are other things too, such as traveling, which I need to do much more of as well, but I think this is a good start.

Well, let's get this out of the way )

So let's see, there's a hell of a lot of news to catch up on, isn't there? Let's start at the most important and work our way down the list of big things, then, shall we?

First off, the vet school application: I've been wait listed. I was pretty much warned as such, since I had to come in for a 3rd interview. The guy said I was right on the line where people are cut off, so he told me to have no expectations, he wasn't sure where I would end up. However, I've managed to do well enough and made it to #2 on the wait list, so if they even use the list at all, I've got a pretty good chance, as I see it. Though maybe I'm being too optimistic? We'll see. As I see it, I've got two real options on paying for the education, military or student loans. I've been told that I'm a prime example for either, so it's entirely my choice. In one I get a full scholarship and a stipend, but one weekend a month I have to report in, and then when I'm done I give the military three years of my life. The other is simply debt for about 15 years. One hell of a choice, eh?

Other big news I think I've already mentioned in the last big post, but now I'm on the other end of things. I am now mostly done with final exams of my final quarter as an undergraduate. I'm actually not terribly excited. It just feels like "whatever". I mean who cares? This is by no means the end of my education and almost feels like a smaller stepping stone than high school. What sucks is that now that I have my degree, officially, I'll be going back to work cleaning animal cages. Thank you education, glad to see you helped out. I got this job regardless of what qualifications I had, and now that I'm there, in a facility that has a lot of use for my skills and knowledge, there is no room to grow into a position that uses it. I'm just about to graduate and my skills are already stagnating. Wonderful.

What else... volvo had some issues again. Josie Jerry and I were on our way to Mac's Cafe (which is a pretty sweet place, btw, just take them seriously when they say the wings are hot)(and eat a Scotch Egg while you're there) when we suddenly hear a rattling sound from behind the car. We were pretty confused about it until we pulled to the side and looked under. The pipe to the muffler had apparently broken off and was being dragged by the car. So we turned around (carefully, since the pipe actually had a bend in it making it much like a hook) and started driving home, the car continuing to get louder and louder, occasionally with terrible sounds coming from the bottom as the pipe caught on stuff and banged around. Eventually we made a left turn and just heard a loud clang and the end of the rattling. Sure enough, in the rearview mirror the catalytic converter and some pipes are just sitting in the road. Thanks to Jerry who grabbed those parts and helped me put them in the back trunk. Getting home from there was interesting as the car no longer had ANY exhaust system. Fortunately, I managed to get it fixed pretty quickly and for lower than I had feared. Still, it raised the very real concern that my car MUST be replaced, and soon. I'm getting to the point of there being no hope on selling it, but I still need a good several thousand dollars so that I can get a car where I won't have to worry about it anymore. OH well, I'll think of something.

Thats the end of the big news, anything smaller than that will have to come from various interactions, probably around either pizza or beers, maybe both.

5 guilty pleasures.

1) New games - I don't quite know why, but I always enjoy getting a new game, be it video, computer, board or role playing. Even when I know it's a bad or unpopular game, I'm still always thrilled by it. This is also possibly one of my greatest vices, as it's hard for me to put down a "new" game for a day or so.

2) High speed internet - Really, the Web is like crack, you can never go back... I just like to browse around and waste time, I read the news, LJs, comics, it's crazy.

3) Rodents - Mice, rats, hamsters, etc., there's something about them I find very appealing. Maybe it's the way they move and react to things, but whenever I'm in a pet store, I almost always go to where they keep the hamsters and just watch. Never grew out of that, I suppose.

4) Sweets - I have a sweet tooth, I don't think this requires any real explanation.

5) A good peel - This is weird and I have no idea, but I enjoy peeling things when it's smooth/easy. If the onion peel comes off in one go, the little plastic ring you peel off of a new milk carton, etc. I really have no idea why this is, but it's one of those little things that brings me a very little bit of satisfaction. I know, I'm a freak, at least I don't butter my muffins.

Hmm, it appears my LJ security has been compromised. It would appear that leaving myself signed in constantly allows anyone who uses my computer to post in my LJ. I was very amused by it, though it took me a surprisingly long time to find it, since she signed me out and made it a friends only posting. Word to the wise, the True Craig never does a friends only post since I figure only my friends know of this LJ anyways and making it friends only is redundant.

Anyways, on to the news! I called the vet school to essentially ask what was going on. It turns out that in my interview, there was a large discrepancy between the opinions of the two interviewers so they need me to come back for another one to break the tie. As such, I am rather nervous about this, as I figured the interview went really well. I had figured that I usually come across rather well to most "adults" and now I'm questioning this idea, which thus makes me nervous about the next interview. No word yet on when that will be, but I'm thinking it's going to be next week sometime. I guess I was supposed to get a letter, but it never came. Reminds me of my supposed credit card replacement. Something is fishy with my mail.

I'm trying to learn some basic programming for the mac these days, sort of as a hobby. I've got a script that checks a website of NASA's every day at 7 and downloads the image and sets it as a desktop image. It's actually pretty sweet. The problem is I want to do that for my dad, but he doesn't have the simple scripting program that I have, so I have to try to convert it to straight-out code. Needless to say, the conversion is slow, though I think I have it mostly done by following a few examples. So far it works fine except that it is trying to download the actual site and not the image and tries to convert the html file to jpg. Needless to say, this doesn't go over too well and I get a blank image. Still, I have a few more things to try before I give up.

Anyways, I'm just wasting time at this point and should get back to my studying. Hopefully I'll update again sometime soon.

So I'm beginning the last quarter of my college career. It's been a good time and I'm sad to see it going by so fast. Of course, that feeling is easily remedied by thinking that I could easily be in education for another 8 years if I follow the Master Plan. On that note, I had my interview with the OSU vet school and it seemed to go very well. I'm currently waiting to see if I'm on the early acceptance or on the wait list or just outright denied. I'm trying to avoid being too hopeful, as things can go quite poorly. But worst case, I'm going to spend another year in preparation and apply again.

In other news, I have managed to scrape enough money together to replace my laptop with the new iMac. Damn I love this machine. The old laptop went to my mom for Christmas so she wouldn't be using my dad's computer and have her own. The biggest problem with this thing is that all the games I had before suddenly work much MUCH better, making me more tempted than ever to play games. At least it's supposed to be an easy quarter, right?

I'm starting to think more and more seriously about where I'm living next year, but I can't make any choices until I hear about vet school. The biggest issue is whether I'll be earning money (I get rejected and work full time) or I'll be going rapidly into debt (I get accepted). I want to live close enough to the vet school that I could cycle there instead of depending on a bus or spending money on the car for gas and a parking pass. Just have to wait and see...

Gaming is going really well. The last session, while combat heavy, brought out personalities in many good ways. I've also been getting a surge of ideas that make me very excited and I'm starting to see pieces of the puzzle that I have placed years ago coming together. I've also been realizing just how unique our group and game are. From what I've been seeing/reading, most campaigns seem to revolve around a central plot which the characters progress through. In our game, the characters are tightly woven into the plot. I don't make plans in writing for very far ahead because too much depends on the actions of the characters and what I feel would work with the players at the moment (yes, this means I'm making shit up as I go along, but I'm following the pattern that I see) and I feel it's really working out well.

Aikido is going to be a challenge this quarter. It's my last quarter as a student and I'm hoping to test for 5th kyu, which would make me a purple belt (I think? It's pretty confusing in our club). What's going to make it hard is they completely changed every form for testing purposes. Instead of having to refresh on the past 18 techniques or so and learning maybe 6 new ones, I now have to completely learn 23 "old" techniques which I have never seen before (and only be tested on one of them, which I need to recognize by name. They changed the names, too) and 6 techniques which are completely new to me. Extra practices for me, it seems. At least the time has been changed to something which works better for me now.

Cherries gets back soon and I'm really looking forward to it. I went out of town for a week or so, then I come back and she leaves for a week or so. Our schedules always seem to be at odds with each other, which is really frustrating at times. However, it has the effect that I treasure what moments we can get, regardless of what we do.

Ok, this update is non-too-quick anymore, so I'll leave it at that.

The Keys to Your Heart

You are attracted to those who have a split personality - cold as ice on the outside but hot as fire in the heart.

In love, you feel the most alive when everything is uncertain, one moment heaven... the next moment hell.

You'd like to your lover to think you are stylish and alluring.

You would be forced to break up with someone who was emotional, moody, and difficult to please.

Your ideal relationship is lasting. You want a relationship that looks to the future... one you can grow with.

Your risk of cheating is zero. You care about society and morality. You would never break a commitment.

You think of marriage as something precious. You'll treasure marriage and treat it as sacred.

In this moment, you think of love as something you thirst for. You'll do anything for love, but you won't fall for it easily.
